Choose Your Own Adventure
The world has transformed rapidly with the advent of technology. Innovations, ideas, and theories have propelled our society forward, helping make the impossible a reality. Design is the tool that combines sciences, like psychology and math, with creativity to pave the way to new concepts and mediums, such as video games.
Video games are more than just sitting at a computer or couch all day. Today, designers and educators are enhancing how we make decisions with game-based learning (GBL) or gamification. Teachers use gamification to enhance the learning experience and make it more engaging for students.
From Millennials to Gen Z and Gen Alpha, studies have shown that they are both technology-biased and video game-oriented, which is behavior that has continued to rise in recent years. Rather than forcing them to read books they may not be interested in, we as educators must consider the study materials that will best promote their growth and learning. This thesis will explore how gamification can increase student engagement in middle school.

To tack onto the thesis book as well as the exhibition, I created a second book to pitch my idea: let us change the design classroom to fit the time.
As educators, we cannot simply be informed of gaming or tell designers “pursue gaming” as a degree. We have to help them which means we have to be knowledgeable on this source as well as consider creating courses or projects revolving around these same topics. If students are interested in gaming, why can we not change some of the courses to suit that?
The following book is my pitch for my own personal game based on the idea of what multiple students aiming for their bachelors could participate to create together in a collaborative experience as I did not create my thesis alone: I spoke to multiple game devs from Riot for information regarding how to build a video game as well as feedback in regards to my current game; I had a dear friend print my 3D models, I consulted my professors for advice on where to go, and I had another friend who copy edited my book. This was a team effort.
